Tool 05 / Resin cost

Price the wash, cure, and waste—not only the resin.

Turn slicer volume into a complete resin-print cost. Include IPA, gloves, filters, release film, hands-on post-processing, machine wear, and the expected cost of failed prints.

01

Enter your resin workflow

Start with slicer volume, then add washing, curing, and consumables.

The bottle is only the first cost.

Use volume from the sliced job

Enter the model and support volume reported by your resin slicer. Add a small measured allowance when resin regularly remains on the build plate, tools, vat wall, or wash container instead of returning to the bottle.

Count the complete wash-and-cure workflow

IPA or detergent, gloves, filters, paper towels, release film, and wash-and-cure equipment all have a cost. Assign a practical per-build amount instead of pretending those supplies are free.

Separate machine time from human time

The printer can run unattended, but removal, support cleanup, washing, drying, curing, inspection, and packing require hands-on labor. Charge only the minutes a person actually works.

Worked example

A 65 mL job from a $35/L bottle uses $2.28 of resin before power, equipment, consumables, labor, and failure risk. The final production cost can therefore be several times the liquid-only estimate.

Expected resin-print cost = (resin + power + machine + consumables + labor + other) ÷ success rate

Measure consumables over several builds and divide the total by successful jobs. This is more reliable than guessing the cost of each glove, wipe, or filter individually.

Resin cost calculator FAQ

Should supports be included in resin used?

Yes. Use the total sliced volume for the complete build, including supports and rafts, because all cured resin leaves the bottle.

How should release film cost be entered?

Divide the film purchase and replacement cost by the approximate number of successful builds it serves, then include that amount in consumables.

Does print height change resin material cost?

Height mainly changes print time on an MSLA printer. Resin cost follows total cured volume, while machine and power cost follow the longer operating time.

Is the suggested price a market price?

No. It is a 30% planning-margin baseline. Taxes, platform fees, shipping, design value, licensing, and local demand still need separate consideration.
